An acclaimed studio’s first apartment development needed luminaires as sophisticated as the design

Willemsen Architecture got in touch through our website enquiry form. The Gold Coast studio’s first development, Alta, required lighting to suit the design aesthetic. The apartment block carries a beach-inspired theme throughout its architecture and interiors. The team wanted long-lasting lighting that would highlight and enhance that theme rather than distract from it. Therefore, the luminaires needed to feel like a natural part of the building, not an afterthought.

The brief covered every part of the complex, including:

• Living spaces, bedrooms, and hallways inside individual apartments
• Kitchens and bathrooms where moisture resistance was essential
• Balconies and outdoor areas exposed to coastal weather
• The pool, gardens, and landscaped grounds

Therefore, each zone came with its own set of requirements. For this reason, kitchens needed a layered approach. Downlights would handle ambient light levels. And striplighting would deliver high-brightness direct light over benchtops and preparation zones. Meanwhile, bathrooms and balconies needed IP-rated luminaires that could handle water and salt air. The pool and garden areas needed fully weatherproof and submersible options. So the job called for a wide range of apartment lighting solutions, all working together across a single cohesive design.

We revised the quote with the Willemsen Architecture team until we landed on the right lighting mix. Getting the specification right before production would avoid costly changes later on. And once the quote was approved, we moved into manufacturing. Several products were customised for Alta specifically. Strip lighting was cut to the exact lengths required by the joinery profiles. Some fixtures were refinished in different colours to complement the beach-inspired palette. Our production team configured and packed each product before dispatching to the site.

At Alta, the luminaires enhance the design without ever competing with it. Each space has the right solution, whether it’s relaxing or working out. And the whole complex reads as a considered, unified design.

Inside the apartments, the layered approach to apartment lighting pays off. Recessed LED downlights deliver a clean ambient base. Strip lighting in kitchens adds high-brightness task lighting ideal for food preparation. Bathrooms have IP-rated luminaires that handle splashes and steam without issue. Outside, the LED lighting system extends the beach theme into the evening. In-ground uplights draw attention to garden features. And spike luminaires illuminate planting across the compact grounds. Every product carries the appropriate IP rating for its location in the building.

Because LED lighting was selected, Alta benefits from long-lasting, low-energy use. Building managers face less maintenance. And residents benefit from lower running costs over the life of the building. For Willemsen Architecture, Alta was a chance to show what they could do as a developer. And it paid off. The lighting enhances the beach-inspired design from the pool to the penthouse.
