Award-winning retirement living at M by Montefiore deserves premium lighting

A luxury development with no room for lighting that falls short

M by Montefiore is one of Sydney’s most celebrated independent retirement developments. Located in Randwick, the 79-apartment complex gives residents a genuine five-star lifestyle. It includes a private cinema, indoor pool, a licensed bar and resort-style amenities.

Richard Crookes Constructions built M by Montefiore to an exceptionally high standard. As David Freeman of Montefiore put it:

“Our vision was to deliver a thriving community for seniors underpinned by an exceptional level of accommodation, amenities and services.”

That vision created an ambitious brief for the aged care lighting. The lighting needed to cover:

• A lobby space, communal areas and a bar
• Apartment suites with balconies and bathrooms
• An indoor pool that would have to deal with humidity, chemicals and evaporation
• Exterior landscaped garden courtyards that combat the elements

Each space had its own aesthetic, functional and technical requirements. The electrical contractors needed to source fixtures that could meet these needs. Being a key lighting manufacturer in Sydney, we were able to support the project. Some products needed to come from our standard range. Others needed to be custom-configured, particularly the LED strip lighting. This required specific segment lengths, factory-soldered tails and precise labelling for each module.

A tailored lighting solution built around the project’s needs

We started by reviewing the architectural plans and take-off quantities in detail. This allowed us to match our products to each space. Our team delivered data sheets for the contractor to check specifications. And on approval, our production team took over with manufacturing, assembly and delivery.

For the LED strip lighting, our team completed full customisation, including:

• Preparation of specific segment lengths to suit each installation
• Factory soldering of tails to each LED strip module
• Clear labelling with type number ready for delivery
• Supply of LED drivers and control gear
• End caps and fixing brackets as required

We also custom-finished the recessed exterior wall luminaire locally. It was re-finished in Dulux ‘Klute’ SN4G5 to meet the exact colour specification.

Rather than delivering the full order at once, we staged delivery across nine months. This meant products arrived when needed, instead of sitting on site getting lost or damaged. It also gave us time to complete the more complex customised items properly. As a result, the project stayed on schedule. And the installation team always had what they needed, when they needed it.

Bespoke lighting that illuminates from the courtyard to the cinema

The finished lighting supports the resort-style feel M by Montefiore is known for. And it meets the demands of senior living where clarity, safety and comfort matter.

The modern apartments include recessed downlights and striplighting. And these are also installed throughout communal areas and other amenities. The recessed downlights deliver energy-efficient performance. And with a slim and minimal trim, it disappears into the ceiling. Understated exterior wall fixtures don’t overwhelm the balcony spaces. And in the pool area, the Nexus lighting fit perfectly in the slatted ceiling. They give clear and even light without compromising the architectural detail. Throughout the garden courtyards, black spike luminaires highlight plants, pathways and driveways.

Overall, the lighting creates a consistent and high-end atmosphere throughout the building. The thriving community for seniors showcases the importance of lighting with purpose.
