From architectural vision to the illuminated reality at the co-branded Novotel and Ibis Airport Hotel in Melbourne

Hotel lighting at scale with luxury in mind
The Novotel and Ibis Styles Melbourne Airport Hotel is a dual-branded complex next to Terminal 4. The new construction required lighting solutions across the hotel including:
- Wet rooms like bathrooms, kitchens and change rooms
- Corridors, hallways and the lobby reception
- Conference and event spaces
Each area needed different lighting purposes like ambient, task and adjustable lighting. Rooms that needed to be agile for conferences, meetings and events had to have more flexible options. The lobby required a mix including downlights and strip for a luxury feel. General use spaces asked for sophisticated luminaires almost hidden in the ceiling. Hallways and corridors had a range of spotlight and strip lighting throughout. Bathrooms needed adequate lighting for Australian standards with bright downlights. Staff rooms, like change rooms and storerooms, included panels and battens. And outdoor garden and landscaping needed weatherproof IP67-rated fixtures.
From technical drawings to 3D modelling
We started by reviewing the technical drawings supplied by the electrical contractors. We reviewed the specified products and sourced fixtures that were either on spec or exceeded them. Next, we developed 3D models and simulations of specific rooms to test the lighting. There was a range of simple rooms like the cleaners’ storage, staff change rooms and utility rooms. And more complex ones like the lobby, conference rooms and bathrooms. Additionally, we supplied data sheets and further technical drawings for more customised products. Once approved, we moved into manufacturing. The Superlight products were shipped over four months during the construction phase. Our team maintained rigorous standards and met the deadlines requested by the client. It is critical to manage products and timelines for large-scale hospitality projects like this.
