A complex ceiling design requiring custom striplighting

Some buildings ask more of their lighting than others. The building ‘Axle’ in Sydney’s Australian Technology Park is one of them. Designed by Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp and developed with Mirvac, the building set a new standard. The office space was designed with custom lighting in mind. It became the headquarters of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. It earned a 6-Star, Green Star rating and was recognised by the Master Builders Association of NSW. The ambitious design meant that every finish mattered. And in a lobby anchored by a sculptural feature ceiling, the lighting needed to be precise.

Lighting a complex ceiling with bespoke lighting manufactured to spec

The lobby at ATP Building 1 was designed to make an impression. A sculptural feature ceiling sweeps above the stairs and escalators. And the electrical contractor working on the project had a clear vision for how to bring it to life. They needed striplighting manufactured to exact lengths. These would be tailored specifically to the ceiling’s unique geometry. This project required precision manufacturing and close collaboration to ensure accuracy.

Datasheets were supplied for approval by the electrical contractor. They provided detailed technical information and confirmed different configurations the contractor could order. Once approved, our production team handled manufacturing and configurations. From precise trimming, factory-soldering and testing, our specialists ensured each product. Some were fitted with factory-moulded power feed connectors. And others were finished with factory-soldered tails as requested. Lastly, DALI LED controllers were delivered with the lighting for lighting management.

An illuminated ceiling that features more like art than structure

The lobby now showcases consistent, clear lighting across busy areas. Custom-configured striplighting illuminates the creative ceiling, flooding the floor beneath. The stairs, escalators and walkways are immersed in bright, even lighting. And the feature ceiling reads as a deliberate statement with quality LED fixtures. Instead of using standard fixtures, this design reflects a contemporary approach to lighting. It no longer needs to be an afterthought and can add to the overall design of a space.
