The Commons wanted to transform a South Yarra building into their largest co-working space. Superlight was engaged to supply linear, downlights and surface-mount luminaires for this project. There were multiple rooms and requirements to adhere to, including:

• Reception space for checking in visitors and managing the space
• Open plan co-working spaces lined with computers and desks
• Meeting and break-out rooms for intense focus or presentations
• Private office rooms that can host small working teams that need flexible lighting
• Open and closed multi-spaces that can accommodate different activities

The concept of The Commons was created in Melbourne by two schoolmates, Cliff Ho and Tom Ye. It was out of a desire to achieve happiness in the workplace and redefine the meaning of a day at the office. Siren Design Group was the interior design agency on the Melbourne project. They designed from the philosophy: “A place for creativity, innovation and community … the creation of a vibrant community at its best.”

And the lighting plan was developed with productivity and well-being in mind. Research demonstrates that lighting directly influences workplace wellbeing. LumaStream’s 2010 study references that LED lighting improves moods and brings an 8.3% improvement to tasks. This is backed by a Phillips study from 2002 showing that good lighting can increase productivity by about 8%. It proves that quality lighting plays a big part in productive work environments.

Engineering precision lighting systems through collaborative expertise

Our team began by thoroughly examining the architectural plans. We identified the types of lighting required in each zone. Then, supplied data sheets and technical drawings for each style of luminaire. Our rigorous approach to documentation eliminated guesswork on-site. Following approvals, our manufacturing team produced custom orders with meticulous attention to detail. Each luminaire was crafted to specification using high-grade materials and delivered to the site. Linear profiles were supplied with suspension kits.
